Today we examine the phenomenon of bioluminescence, the production of light by living organisms. This ability is found across a remarkable range of species, from deep-sea fish to fireflies and certain fungi. The light is generated through a chemical reaction involving a molecule called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. Organisms use bioluminescence for several purposes: attracting prey, deterring predators, and communicating with potential mates. In the deep ocean, where sunlight cannot penetrate, this natural light becomes an essential tool for survival and interaction.
