Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, yet they occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor. They support roughly a quarter of all marine species by providing shelter and breeding grounds. However, rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, in which corals expel the algae living in their tissues and lose their colour. Without these algae, corals starve and eventually die. Scientists warn that protecting reefs requires reducing carbon emissions and limiting local pollution and overfishing.
