PTE speaking format: the tasks and what each one is really testing
PTE Academic Speaking runs through Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture and Answer Short Question. PTE Core swaps in workplace tasks including Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. There is no human examiner and no interview: you speak into a microphone and the recording is scored.
That matters more than it sounds. Because the scoring is acoustic, the two enabling skills that decide most speaking scores are Pronunciation and Oral Fluency, and neither is something you can judge in your own voice. Hesitation, restarts and uneven pacing cost marks even when every word is correct, which is the usual reason a confident speaker scores lower than expected.

PTE speaking marks distribution: fluency and pronunciation carry it
Speaking tasks are scored on content plus the acoustic enabling skills. Content alone is not enough: a response that says the right things in a halting, restarted delivery will lose marks that a smoother, slightly less complete answer keeps.
- Oral Fluency rewards an even pace with natural phrasing. Restarting a sentence is more costly than continuing through a small mistake.
- Pronunciation is measured against intelligibility, not an accent standard. Clear word endings and correct stress matter far more than sounding native.
- Content still has to be there, particularly in Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture, where a fluent answer that misses the key information caps out.

PTE speaking tips that move fluency and pronunciation
- Never restart a sentence. Push through a stumble. A single mispronounced word costs less than the fluency break of going back.
- Start speaking promptly. Long silence before you begin can end the recording early on some tasks, and hesitation reads as disfluency.
- Read Aloud is fluency practice you can measure. Same text, same passage, until the pacing is even, then check whether the pronunciation score moved.
- In Repeat Sentence, prioritise rhythm over completeness. Reproducing the shape and stress of the sentence scores better than a broken word-perfect attempt.
- Give Describe Image a fixed order. Overview, the two or three biggest features, then a closing line. Structure removes the pauses that cost fluency marks.
