PTE Answer Short Question: template, tips & practice
Answer Short Question is a short PTE Academic Speaking task. You hear a simple general-knowledge question and answer it in one or a few words. It is quick and low-stress, but it still contributes to your Speaking and Listening scores, so accurate listening and clear pronunciation count.
How PTE Answer Short Question is scored
Answer Short Question is scored on content (the correct answer) and pronunciation. There is no template, the skill is understanding the question and giving the single correct word or short phrase clearly. Common themes include everyday objects, opposites, jobs, places and basic academic vocabulary.
The PTE Answer Short Question template
- 1Listen for the key noun or question word; the answer is almost always one or two words.
- 2Answer immediately and clearly, "A dentist.", "The kitchen.", "Winter."
- 3If unsure, give your best single guess rather than staying silent.
- 4Pronounce the answer clearly; a mumbled correct answer can still lose pronunciation marks.
Worked example
Question: "What do you call the doctor who treats teeth?" Answer: "A dentist." Question: "What is the opposite of expensive?" Answer: "Cheap."
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-explaining; one or two words is the correct length.
- Staying silent when unsure; always give your best guess.
- Mishearing the question word; focus your listening on what is being asked.
- Speaking too quietly; say the answer clearly and confidently.
