For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Australia no longer uses the old 50/65/79 all-skills shortcut. The Department of Home Affairs lists separate PTE cutoffs for listening, reading, writing and speaking. Points are still 0, 10 and 20 for Competent, Proficient and Superior English.
| English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 | 20 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 | 10 |
| Competent | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 | 0 |
If your test was taken on or before 6 August 2025, older PTE Academic cutoffs may still be accepted for some visas until 6 August 2028. Confirm the rule for your visa subclass before relying on a score.
How the PTE overall score is calculated
This is the part most calculators skip, and it is why two people with the same four skill scores can end up with different overall scores. The PTE Academic overall score is not the average of your four communicative skills. PTE is an integrated test: a single task can feed several skills at once, and the overall figure reflects your performance across every item in the test rather than four separate section totals.
Underneath the four communicative skills sit six enabling skills - Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary and Written Discourse. A weak enabling skill quietly pulls down several task scores at once, which is the usual explanation when an overall score comes back lower than the four skill scores seem to justify. Pronunciation and Oral Fluency are the two that surprise people most, because you cannot hear your own delivery the way the scoring engine does.
So treat the number above as a close estimate, not an official calculation. It is accurate enough to plan around and to tell you whether you are near a visa or university threshold, which is what it is for. The full mechanics are in how PTE is scored.
PTE score calculator for each module
Each module is reported on the same 10 to 90 scale as the overall score, so a "60 in Reading" means the same thing as a "60 overall". What differs is which tasks feed each module, and that is what decides where your practice time actually pays off:
| Module | Fed by tasks including | Also contributes to |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking | Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Question | Reading and Listening, through the integrated tasks |
| Writing | Summarize Written Text, Write Essay | Reading, via Summarize Written Text |
| Reading | Fill in the Blanks, Re-order Paragraphs, Multiple Choice | Writing, via the Reading and Writing blanks |
| Listening | Summarize Spoken Text, Write from Dictation, Highlight Incorrect Words | Writing, via the dictation and summary tasks |
Read the right-hand column carefully, because it is where the leverage is. Write from Dictation feeds both Listening and Writing, and it uses partial credit, so every correctly spelled word earns a mark. If one module is holding your overall down, the fastest route up is usually a task that feeds two modules at once rather than more practice on the weak module alone. Work through them on the free PTE practice tests, or see the PTE score chart for what each band means.
PTE score calculator FAQ
How is the PTE overall score calculated?
It is not an average of your four skill scores. PTE Academic is an integrated test, so one task can feed several skills, and the overall score reflects your performance across every item rather than four separate section totals. Six enabling skills (Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary and Written Discourse) sit underneath and affect multiple task scores at once.
Is this PTE score calculator accurate?
It gives a close estimate, not an official Pearson score. Because PTE weights integrated tasks and enabling skills that a four-number input cannot capture, treat the result as a planning figure: accurate enough to tell you whether you are near a visa or university threshold, not a substitute for a real score report.
Can I calculate my PTE score for each module?
Yes. Every module (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) is reported on the same 10 to 90 scale as the overall score. Enter each one above to see how the four combine, and use the module table on this page to see which tasks feed each module, since several tasks count towards two modules at once.
What PTE score do I need for Australia PR?
For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs sets separate per-skill cutoffs for Competent, Proficient and Superior English, worth 0, 10 and 20 points. The table above lists the current figures, and they must be met in each skill rather than only overall. Full detail is in the PTE for Australia PR guide.
Has the PTE score calculator changed with the new update?
The 10 to 90 scale itself has not changed, so the calculation is the same. What changed is the Australian migration cutoffs, which moved to per-skill requirements for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. If you are comparing against an older guide, that is usually the difference you are seeing.
