PTE Core Score Chart and CLB Calculator
This PTE Core score chart shows the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level IRCC gives each PTE Core score, skill by skill, from CLB 3 to CLB 10. Canada does not use your overall score: each of your four skill scores converts to its own CLB level, and most programs set a minimum in every skill. CLB 7, the Federal Skilled Worker minimum, needs at least 60 in listening, 60 in reading, 69 in writing and 68 in speaking. Enter your scores below to see your CLB levels, the programs they meet and your CRS language points.

PTE Core score chart: CLB levels by skill
Find each of your skill scores in its column. The row it falls in is your CLB level for that skill. The four skills convert on different scales, so the same score can be a different level: a 60 is CLB 7 in listening and reading but CLB 6 in writing and speaking.
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 89 to 90 | 88 to 90 | 90 | 89 to 90 |
| CLB 9 | 82 to 88 | 78 to 87 | 88 to 89 | 84 to 88 |
| CLB 8 | 71 to 81 | 69 to 77 | 79 to 87 | 76 to 83 |
| CLB 7 | 60 to 70 | 60 to 68 | 69 to 78 | 68 to 75 |
| CLB 6 | 50 to 59 | 51 to 59 | 60 to 68 | 59 to 67 |
| CLB 5 | 39 to 49 | 42 to 50 | 51 to 59 | 51 to 58 |

| CLB 3 | 18 to 27 | 24 to 32 | 32 to 40 | 34 to 41 |
A score below the CLB 3 row has no CLB level in IRCC's chart. None of the programs on this page accepts CLB 3.
PTE Core scores for each CLB level
The minimum PTE Core score for each level, and what that level is used for.
- CLB 10: 89 in listening, 88 in reading, 90 in writing and 89 in speaking. The top of the chart. It is worth the most CRS language points, 34 per skill without a spouse, and a writing score of 90 is the only way to reach it in writing.
- CLB 9: 82 in listening, 78 in reading, 88 in writing and 84 in speaking. None of the programs above asks for it. It is worth 31 CRS points per skill without a spouse, 8 more than CLB 8, and with all four skills at CLB 9 the higher skill-transferability points apply. Writing is the narrowest band, 88 or 89 only.
- CLB 8: 71 in listening, 69 in reading, 79 in writing and 76 in speaking. Worth 23 CRS points per skill without a spouse, 6 more than CLB 7 in each of the four skills.
- CLB 7: 60 in listening, 60 in reading, 69 in writing and 68 in speaking. The minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, for Canadian Experience Class applicants with a TEER 0 or 1 job, and for university graduates applying for a post-graduation work permit. It is also where skill-transferability points begin.
- CLB 6: 50 in listening, 51 in reading, 60 in writing and 59 in speaking. Enough for Canadian Experience Class TEER 2 or 3 jobs and for Federal Skilled Trades, but one level short of the Federal Skilled Worker minimum.
- CLB 5: 39 in listening, 42 in reading, 51 in writing and 51 in speaking. The minimum for Canadian Experience Class TEER 2 or 3 jobs, for college or polytechnic graduates applying for a post-graduation work permit, and for speaking and listening in Federal Skilled Trades.
- CLB 4: 28 in listening, 33 in reading, 41 in writing and 42 in speaking. The minimum for reading and writing in Federal Skilled Trades, and for speaking and listening in a Canadian citizenship application.
- CLB 3: 18 in listening, 24 in reading, 32 in writing and 34 in speaking. Below the minimum of every program on this page, and it earns no CRS points.
What PTE Core score do you need for Canada PR?
The minimum CLB level for each program, and the lowest PTE Core score in each skill that reaches it. Every program on this list applies its minimum to each skill separately.
| Program | Minimum | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Skilled Worker (Express Entry) | CLB 7 in all four skills | 60+ | 60+ | 69+ | 68+ |
| Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0 or 1 job | CLB 7 in all four skills | 60+ | 60+ | 69+ | 68+ |
| Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2 or 3 job | CLB 5 in all four skills | 39+ | 42+ | 51+ | 51+ |
| Federal Skilled Trades | CLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing | 39+ | 33+ | 41+ | 51+ |
| PGWP, university programs | CLB 7 in all four skills | 60+ | 60+ | 69+ | 68+ |
| PGWP, college, polytechnic or other non-university programs | CLB 5 in all four skills | 39+ | 42+ | 51+ | 51+ |
| Canadian citizenship, ages 18 to 54 (per Pearson) | CLB 4 speaking and listening | 28+ | – | – | 42+ |
The post-graduation work permit language requirement applies to applications made on or after 1 November 2024. Pearson lists PTE Core as accepted for Canadian citizenship; IRCC asks applicants aged 18 to 54 for CLB 4 in speaking and listening.
CRS points for your PTE Core score
In Express Entry, the Comprehensive Ranking System gives points for each skill of your first official language according to its CLB level. The totals below assume the same level in all four skills; with mixed levels, add the points for each skill.
| CLB level | Per skill, no spouse | Per skill, with spouse | All four skills, no spouse |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 or more | 34 | 32 | 136 |
| CLB 9 | 31 | 29 | 124 |
| CLB 8 | 23 | 22 | 92 |
| CLB 7 | 17 | 16 | 68 |
| CLB 6 | 9 | 8 | 36 |
| CLB 4 or 5 | 6 | 6 | 24 |
Below CLB 4 a skill earns no points. Language also unlocks skill-transferability points when it is combined with education or foreign work experience: those start when all four skills reach CLB 7 and increase when all four reach CLB 9.
PTE Core vs IELTS General and CELPIP
There is no direct PTE Core to IELTS conversion. IRCC compares the three accepted English tests through CLB levels instead, so the same CLB row tells you the equivalent result on each. Scores are the minimum for the level, in the order listening / reading / writing / speaking.
| CLB level | PTE Core | IELTS General Training | CELPIP-General |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 89 / 88 / 90 / 89 | 8.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.5 | 10 |
| CLB 9 | 82 / 78 / 88 / 84 | 8.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 | 9 |
| CLB 8 | 71 / 69 / 79 / 76 | 7.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 | 8 |
| CLB 7 | 60 / 60 / 69 / 68 | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 | 7 |
| CLB 6 | 50 / 51 / 60 / 59 | 5.5 / 5.0 / 5.5 / 5.5 | 6 |
| CLB 5 | 39 / 42 / 51 / 51 | 5.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 / 5.0 | 5 |
| CLB 4 | 28 / 33 / 41 / 42 | 4.5 / 3.5 / 4.0 / 4.0 | 4 |
CELPIP-General levels line up one to one with CLB levels. PTE Academic is compared differently: its IELTS, CEFR and Australia PR tables are on the PTE score chart, and the PTE to IELTS score calculator converts a score. Neither applies to PTE Core.
How PTE Core is scored
PTE Core reports an overall score and a score for each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, all on the same 10 to 90 scale. Many tasks are integrated and count toward two skills: Read Aloud feeds speaking and reading, and Write from Dictation feeds listening and writing. A weak task can therefore pull down two skill scores, which matters when a program needs a minimum in each.
Pearson says most results arrive within two business days, occasionally up to five, and a PTE Core score is valid for two years from the test date. For the task types and timing, see the PTE exam format; for how the scoring works, see how PTE is scored.
Reaching your CLB target
- Writing and speaking set the bar. For CLB 7 they need 69 and 68, while listening and reading need 60. At CLB 9 writing needs 88.
- One point can move a whole level. A 59 in listening is CLB 6 and a 60 is CLB 7, so a score just under a cutoff is worth another attempt at the test.
- Practise under the real timing. Our PTE Core practice tests are scored on the same 10 to 90 scale. Start with the free PTE Core Full Mock Test 1, or drill one skill with PTE Core Writing Test 1 or PTE Core Speaking Test 1.
PTE Core score chart FAQ
What is CLB 7 in PTE Core?
CLB 7 needs at least 60 in listening, 60 in reading, 69 in writing and 68 in speaking. The full CLB 7 ranges are listening 60 to 70, reading 60 to 68, writing 69 to 78 and speaking 68 to 75. CLB 7 in all four skills is the Federal Skilled Worker minimum and the Canadian Experience Class minimum for TEER 0 and 1 jobs.
What PTE Core score is CLB 9?
CLB 9 needs at least 82 in listening, 78 in reading, 88 in writing and 84 in speaking. Writing is the tightest: CLB 9 covers only 88 and 89, and 90 is CLB 10.
What PTE Core score is CLB 5?
CLB 5 needs at least 39 in listening, 42 in reading, 51 in writing and 51 in speaking. It is the minimum for Canadian Experience Class jobs in TEER 2 or 3 and for college or polytechnic graduates applying for a post-graduation work permit.
Does IRCC use the overall PTE Core score?
No. IRCC converts each of your four skill scores to a CLB level separately, and every program minimum applies skill by skill. A high overall score does not give you CLB 7 if one skill is below its CLB 7 cutoff, and writing (69) and speaking (68) have the highest cutoffs.
Is there an official PTE Core to IELTS conversion?
Not directly. IRCC compares PTE Core, IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General through CLB levels. CLB 7, for example, is IELTS General 6.0 in every skill, CELPIP 7, and PTE Core 60 in listening, 60 in reading, 69 in writing and 68 in speaking. Pearson's PTE to IELTS concordance covers PTE Academic and IELTS Academic, not PTE Core.
How long is a PTE Core score valid for Canada?
Pearson says a PTE Core score is valid for two years from the test date, and IRCC requires your results to be less than two years old both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
Can I use PTE Academic for Canada PR?
No. For Express Entry and the other economic immigration programs, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. The two tests use the same 10 to 90 scale, but only PTE Core results are converted to CLB levels for these programs.
How many CRS points does CLB 9 give?
Without a spouse or common-law partner, CLB 9 is worth 31 CRS points per skill, 124 for all four. With a spouse or partner it is 29 per skill, 116 in total. CLB 10 or more gives 34 per skill, or 32 with a spouse.
