Today we'll examine how coral reefs respond to rising ocean temperatures. When water becomes too warm, corals expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, a process called bleaching. Without these algae, corals lose their primary food source and their vibrant colour, turning ghostly white. If high temperatures persist, the corals eventually starve and die. Scientists are now investigating heat-resistant coral varieties and assisted evolution techniques, hoping to preserve reef ecosystems that support roughly a quarter of all marine species.
