Coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea because they support an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Although they cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, they shelter roughly a quarter of all marine species. Reefs also protect coastlines from storms and erosion, and they sustain fisheries that feed millions of people. However, rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification are causing widespread coral bleaching, threatening these vital ecosystems and the communities that depend upon them.
