Writing · Summarize Written Text · question 2 of 3

Summarise the passage in writing.

The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain during the latter half of the eighteenth century, marked one of the most profound transformations in human history. Prior to this period, the majority of goods were produced manually in small workshops or within domestic settings, a system often referred to as cottage industry. The introduction of mechanised production, powered initially by water and later by steam, fundamentally altered the scale and speed at which goods could be manufactured. Innovations such as the spinning jenny, the power loom, and the steam engine enabled factories to produce textiles and other commodities in unprecedented quantities, dramatically reducing costs and reshaping patterns of trade. These technological advances were accompanied by sweeping social and demographic changes. As factories concentrated in urban centres, vast numbers of people migrated from rural villages to rapidly growing cities in search of employment, giving rise to a new industrial working class. While industrialisation generated considerable wealth and laid the foundations for modern economic growth, it also produced severe hardships. Early factory workers, including many women and children, frequently endured long hours, dangerous conditions, and meagre wages. Overcrowded cities struggled with inadequate housing, poor sanitation, and the spread of disease. These conditions eventually prompted reform movements and the gradual introduction of labour laws designed to protect workers and improve public health. Historians continue to debate the overall legacy of the Industrial Revolution, weighing its contribution to rising living standards and technological progress against the environmental degradation and social inequalities it helped to create. Nevertheless, there is broad agreement that this era established the structural foundations of the contemporary industrialised world, influencing everything from patterns of urbanisation to the organisation of labour and the trajectory of global economic development.
