Writing · Summarize Written Text · question 1 of 3

Summarise the passage in writing.

The concept of the circular economy has emerged as a compelling alternative to the traditional linear model of production and consumption, which follows a "take, make, dispose" pattern. In a linear economy, raw materials are extracted, transformed into products, and ultimately discarded as waste, placing enormous pressure on finite natural resources and generating significant environmental harm. By contrast, a circular economy is designed to keep materials and products in use for as long as possible, extracting maximum value before recovering and regenerating components at the end of each service life. This approach is built upon three guiding principles: designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in circulation, and regenerating natural systems.

Proponents argue that the circular model offers substantial economic as well as environmental benefits. Businesses that adopt circular practices, such as remanufacturing, repairing, and recycling, can reduce their dependence on volatile raw material markets and lower production costs over time. Some companies have begun leasing products rather than selling them outright, retaining ownership of materials so they can be reclaimed and reused. However, the transition is not without obstacles. Existing infrastructure, supply chains, and consumer habits are deeply rooted in the linear system, and shifting to circular models often requires significant upfront investment and coordination across industries. Furthermore, regulatory frameworks and pricing structures frequently fail to account for the long-term costs of waste and pollution, making linear production artificially cheap. Despite these challenges, a growing number of governments and corporations view the circular economy as essential to achieving sustainability goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and building resilience against resource scarcity in an increasingly constrained world.
