PTE Summarize Group Discussion: template, tips & practice
Summarize Group Discussion is one of the newer PTE Speaking tasks, and it appears in both PTE Academic and PTE Core. You listen to a recording of three people discussing a topic, and after 10 seconds of preparation you have up to 2 minutes to summarize the whole discussion in your own words. Because it feeds both your Listening and Speaking scores, note-taking while you listen, capturing each speaker's main point, is what turns two minutes of talking into a structured, high-scoring answer.
How PTE Summarize Group Discussion is scored
Summarize Group Discussion is scored on content (covering the topic and the different speakers' views), oral fluency (a steady pace across the full two minutes) and pronunciation. You are rewarded for summarizing the range of opinions clearly and speaking without long pauses, not for repeating the discussion word for word. Running out of things to say before two minutes, or covering only one speaker, are the biggest score losses.
The PTE Summarize Group Discussion template
- 1While listening, note the topic and each speaker's main point or stance in one or two words, and mark where they agree or disagree.
- 2Open by naming the topic: "The speakers discussed [topic]."
- 3Summarize each view in turn: "The first speaker argued that [point]. The second added, or disagreed, saying [point]. The third suggested [point]."
- 4State the common ground or the conflict: "They agreed that [X], but differed on [Y]."
- 5Close with a takeaway and keep talking to fill the time: "Overall, the discussion showed [main point]." Hold a steady pace until the two minutes end.
Worked example
The speakers discussed whether remote work benefits companies. The first speaker argued it cuts office costs and widens the talent pool. The second disagreed, saying it weakens team culture and mentoring. The third suggested a hybrid model as a compromise. They agreed that flexibility matters, but differed on how much time staff should spend in the office. Overall, the discussion showed that remote work offers clear savings but real trade-offs for collaboration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Summarizing only one speaker; cover every speaker's view for full content marks.
- Going silent well before two minutes; have a closing line ready and keep talking at a steady pace.
- Trying to write full sentences during the audio; take short notes per speaker, then build sentences afterwards.
- Repeating the discussion word for word instead of summarizing the main points in your own words.
- Speaking in a flat monotone; vary your stress so the pronunciation engine reads a natural rhythm.
