Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, yet they occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor. They support roughly a quarter of all marine species, providing food and shelter. However, rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, when corals expel the algae living in their tissues. Without these algae, corals lose their colour and primary energy source, eventually dying. Scientists warn that without significant reductions in carbon emissions, many reef systems could collapse within the next few decades.
