Writing · Summarize Written Text · question 1 of 3

Summarise the passage in writing.

The concept of the circular economy has gained significant traction among policymakers and businesses seeking to reconcile economic growth with environmental sustainability. Unlike the traditional linear economic model, which follows a "take, make, dispose" pattern, the circular economy is designed to keep materials, products, and resources in use for as long as possible. It emphasises principles such as durability, reusability, repairability, and recyclability, thereby minimising waste and reducing the demand for virgin raw materials. Proponents argue that this approach not only alleviates pressure on finite natural resources but also generates new economic opportunities through innovation in product design, remanufacturing, and material recovery.

Several industries have begun to adopt circular practices with measurable success. In the textile sector, for example, some manufacturers now collect used garments to recover fibres that can be respun into new fabrics, substantially lowering both water consumption and carbon emissions. Similarly, electronics companies have introduced modular designs that allow consumers to replace individual components rather than discarding entire devices. However, the transition to a circular economy faces considerable obstacles. Existing infrastructure, supply chains, and consumer habits are deeply embedded in linear models, and shifting away from them requires substantial investment and coordination. Moreover, the absence of standardised regulations across countries complicates efforts to scale circular initiatives internationally. Critics also caution that some recycling processes remain energy-intensive and may yield only marginal environmental benefits. Despite these challenges, a growing body of evidence suggests that, with appropriate policy support and technological advancement, the circular economy could play a pivotal role in addressing resource scarcity and climate change in the decades ahead.
