Writing · Summarize Written Text · question 1 of 3

Summarise the passage in writing.

The concept of the circular economy has gained significant traction as nations grapple with the environmental consequences of unchecked consumption. Unlike the traditional linear model, which follows a "take, make, dispose" pattern, the circular economy seeks to keep materials in use for as long as possible. This is achieved through strategies such as designing products for durability, repairing rather than discarding broken goods, remanufacturing components, and recycling materials back into the production stream. Proponents argue that this approach not only reduces the strain on finite natural resources but also generates economic opportunities by fostering new industries and employment in repair and recovery sectors.

Despite its appeal, the transition to a circular economy faces substantial obstacles. Many existing supply chains and manufacturing processes are deeply embedded in linear assumptions, making structural change costly and slow. Consumer behaviour also poses a challenge, as the convenience and low price of disposable goods continue to drive demand. Furthermore, certain products are technically difficult to recycle because they combine multiple materials that cannot easily be separated. Economists caution that without coherent policy frameworks, such as extended producer responsibility schemes and standardised recycling regulations, businesses lack sufficient incentive to invest in circular practices. Nevertheless, a growing number of governments and corporations have begun to recognise that long-term sustainability and competitiveness may depend on decoupling economic growth from resource depletion. They view the circular model not merely as an environmental imperative but as a strategic response to volatile commodity prices and tightening regulations. As awareness spreads, the circular economy is increasingly framed as a practical pathway toward reconciling prosperity with planetary boundaries, though its full realisation will require coordinated effort across industry, government, and society.
