Today we examine the phenomenon of bioluminescence, the production of light by living organisms. Found in fireflies, deep-sea fish, and certain fungi, this light results from a chemical reaction involving a molecule called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. Unlike incandescent light, bioluminescence generates almost no heat, making it remarkably efficient. Organisms use it for diverse purposes: attracting mates, luring prey, or deterring predators. Scientists now harness these glowing proteins as biological markers, allowing them to track gene activity and disease processes within living cells.
