For centuries, the precise function of dreams has eluded both philosophers and scientists. Early thinkers often regarded dreams as messages from the gods or windows into hidden desires. Modern researchers, equipped with brain-imaging technology, have proposed a range of more grounded explanations, though no single theory has achieved universal acceptance. One prominent hypothesis holds that dreaming helps the brain process and consolidate memories, sorting the experiences of the day and integrating them with older knowledge. Supporters note that people deprived of dream-rich sleep often struggle to retain newly learned information. A competing view emphasises emotional regulation, suggesting that dreams allow individuals to rehearse threatening situations in a safe environment, thereby reducing anxiety over time. Some scientists, more sceptical, argue that dreams may simply be a by-product of random neural activity to which the waking mind later assigns meaning. This interpretation does not deny that dreams can feel significant, but it questions whether they serve any genuine purpose. What makes the debate so difficult to resolve is the inherently private nature of dreaming. Researchers must rely on participants' reports, which are often fragmentary and distorted by the process of waking and recalling. As imaging techniques become more sophisticated, scientists hope to observe the dreaming brain more directly, perhaps one day reconstructing the broad content of dreams from neural signals alone. Until then, the meaning of dreams is likely to remain one of the most intriguing and contested questions in the study of the human mind.

According to the passage, why is the debate about the function of dreams difficult to resolve?

  1. A.Because brain-imaging technology has not yet been invented.
  2. B.Because dreams are private and reported through fragmentary, distorted recollections.
  3. C.Because scientists agree that dreams serve no purpose whatsoever.
  4. D.Because early philosophers prevented modern research from progressing.
