Writing · Summarize Written Text · question 2 of 3

Summarise the passage in writing.

Sleep, long regarded as a passive state of rest, is now understood by neuroscientists to be an active and indispensable process for maintaining cognitive function. During sleep, the brain undertakes a remarkable array of tasks, chief among them the consolidation of memory. Information acquired during waking hours is initially stored in a fragile form, vulnerable to interference and decay. As the sleeping brain replays the neural patterns associated with recent experiences, these memories are gradually transferred to more stable, long-term storage in the cortex, a process that strengthens learning and integrates new knowledge with existing frameworks. Equally important is the role sleep plays in clearing metabolic waste. Research has revealed that during deep sleep, the spaces between brain cells expand, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flush out toxic by-products that accumulate during the day, including proteins linked to neurodegenerative disease. This discovery has prompted renewed interest in the relationship between chronic sleep deprivation and conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. The implications extend well beyond memory and disease prevention. Insufficient sleep impairs attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation, undermining both individual wellbeing and broader social productivity. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that people who are sleep-deprived perform comparably to those who are intoxicated on tasks requiring vigilance and reaction time. Despite mounting evidence of its importance, sleep is frequently sacrificed in modern societies that prize constant activity and equate busyness with success. Artificial lighting, electronic devices, and irregular schedules further disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythms. Researchers increasingly argue that public health initiatives should treat adequate sleep with the same seriousness afforded to diet and exercise, recognising it as a foundational pillar of physical and mental health rather than a dispensable luxury.
