Coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support roughly a quarter of all marine species. These ecosystems thrive on a partnership between coral polyps and tiny algae living inside them. The algae provide energy through photosynthesis, while the coral offers shelter. However, rising sea temperatures cause corals to expel their algae, leading to bleaching. Without intervention, scientists warn that most reefs could collapse within decades, threatening fisheries, coastal protection, and millions of livelihoods worldwide.
