The concept of 'flow', introduced by the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, describes a mental state in which a person becomes so completely absorbed in an activity that the ordinary sense of time and self seems to dissolve. Athletes sometimes call it 'being in the zone'; musicians and writers describe losing themselves in their work. Csikszentmihalyi argued that flow tends to arise under specific conditions. The activity must offer clear goals and immediate feedback, so that the individual always knows whether they are succeeding. Crucially, the challenge of the task must be carefully balanced against the person's level of skill. If the challenge greatly exceeds one's ability, the result is anxiety; if the task is too easy, the result is boredom. Flow occupies the narrow band between these two states, where difficulty and competence are well matched and steadily rising together. People who regularly experience flow report higher levels of satisfaction and a stronger sense of purpose, which has prompted interest from educators and workplace designers seeking to cultivate it deliberately. Yet flow cannot simply be commanded into existence; it emerges as a by-product of genuine engagement rather than a goal pursued directly. Attempts to force the state, or to chase it for its own sake, tend to undermine the very absorption they seek. For this reason, those who study flow generally recommend designing environments and tasks that make the experience more likely, while leaving the individual free to become naturally immersed.
According to the passage, under which condition is flow most likely to occur?
- A.When the difficulty of a task is well matched to the person's level of skill.
- B.When the task is far too easy and requires little effort.
- C.When the person deliberately forces themselves to feel absorbed.
- D.When the challenge greatly exceeds the person's ability.
The correct answer is shown in your review when you finish the test.
