The Silk Road was not a single road at all, but a vast network of trade routes that connected the East and West for many centuries. Stretching from China through Central Asia to the Mediterranean, it facilitated the exchange of goods such as silk, spices, precious metals, and ceramics. Yet to view the Silk Road purely as a commercial channel would be to overlook its profound cultural significance. Alongside material goods, the routes carried ideas, religions, technologies, and artistic styles across thousands of kilometres. Buddhism, for instance, spread from India into China largely through merchants and pilgrims travelling these paths. Similarly, innovations such as papermaking and printing gradually made their way westward, transforming societies far from their origins. The cities that grew along the route became vibrant centres of learning and diversity, where travellers from distant lands mingled and shared knowledge. However, the Silk Road also had unintended consequences. The same routes that carried wealth and wisdom occasionally carried disease, and some historians believe they contributed to the spread of devastating epidemics. By the late medieval period, the rise of maritime trade and political instability in Central Asia led to the gradual decline of the overland routes. Nevertheless, the legacy of the Silk Road endures, reminding us that the exchange of ideas can be just as transformative as the exchange of goods.

What is the author's main point about the Silk Road?

  1. A.It was important not only for trade but also for the exchange of ideas and culture.
  2. B.It consisted of a single well-maintained road between China and the Mediterranean.
  3. C.It was responsible primarily for spreading disease across continents.
  4. D.It declined only because of political instability in Central Asia.

The correct answer is shown in your review when you finish the test.
