Coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support roughly a quarter of all marine species. This biodiversity arises from a partnership between coral polyps and tiny algae living in their tissues. The algae photosynthesise and supply the coral with food, while the coral offers shelter and nutrients in return. When ocean temperatures rise, this relationship breaks down, the algae are expelled, and the coral bleaches. Without rapid recovery, bleached reefs eventually starve and die, threatening countless dependent organisms.
