Writing · Summarize Written Text · question 2 of 3

Summarise the passage in writing.

The transition to remote and hybrid work, accelerated dramatically by the global pandemic, has reshaped expectations about where and how professional tasks are performed. For many employees, the disappearance of the daily commute has freed up hours each week, reduced transport costs, and allowed greater flexibility in balancing personal and professional obligations. Employers, meanwhile, have discovered that they can reduce expenditure on office space and recruit talent from a far wider geographical pool, no longer constrained by the need for staff to live within commuting distance of a central headquarters. These shifts have prompted some commentators to predict the permanent decline of the traditional office.

Yet the picture is more complicated than such forecasts suggest. Remote work can blur the boundaries between home and employment, leading to longer hours and a creeping sense that one is never truly off duty. Junior employees, in particular, may struggle to absorb the informal knowledge and mentorship that arise naturally from sharing a physical workplace. Spontaneous conversations, which often spark innovation and collaboration, are difficult to replicate through scheduled video calls. Furthermore, prolonged isolation can erode the sense of belonging that binds teams together and sustains organisational culture. In response, many companies have adopted hybrid arrangements that combine the autonomy of remote work with periodic in-person collaboration. The optimal balance, however, varies considerably according to industry, role, and individual circumstance. As organisations continue to experiment, the long-term consequences for productivity, career progression, and employee wellbeing remain uncertain. What seems clear is that the rigid, office-centred model of the past is unlikely to return in its previous form, and that managers must learn to lead distributed teams with intention rather than improvisation.
