Coral reefs, often called the rainforests of the sea, support roughly a quarter of all marine species despite covering less than one percent of the ocean floor. However, rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, where stressed corals expel the algae that provide them with food and colour. Repeated bleaching events weaken reefs and can lead to widespread death. Scientists are now experimenting with heat-resistant coral varieties and artificial nurseries, hoping to restore damaged reefs and preserve the biodiversity and coastal protection these ecosystems provide.
