How long is a PTE score valid?

A PTE Academic score is valid for two years from your test date. After that the result expires and can no longer be sent to universities or immigration authorities, so you would have to sit the test again. That two-year window is set by Pearson and is the same for PTE Academic and PTE Core. The part that trips people up is not the two years itself, it is the difference between how long the result stays valid and how recent an institution or visa programme actually wants it to be. How long is a PTE score valid for?

A PTE result is valid for two years. This applies to your overall score and to all four skill scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. There is no separate, shorter validity for any single skill, and there is no premium version of the test that lasts longer. Two years is the standard across the board.

Two years is a sensible window because English ability can drift over time, so universities and governments want a reasonably current result. It is also long enough to cover most application timelines, from gathering documents to receiving an offer or an invitation to apply. The practical risk is not that two years is too short, it is that people sit the test too early, then find the result has aged out by the time they are ready to lodge an application.

When does the two years start, exactly?

Validity is counted from your test date, the day you actually sat the exam. It is not counted from the day your result was released, and not from the day you sent it to a university or an immigration department. Since PTE results usually come back within about two business days, the gap between test date and result date is small, but the date that matters for validity is always the test date printed on your Score Report.

A simple example: if you sat PTE on 1 March 2026, your score is valid until 1 March 2028. If your application deadline is in April 2028, that score will already have expired by a month, even though it feels recent. How to check your PTE score expiry date

There is no countdown timer in your account, so you work it out from the test date:

• Sign in to your Pearson account, the same one you used to book the test.
• Open your Score Report and note the test date.
• Add two years to that date. That is the last day the score can be used.

Your account also keeps a history of every test you have sat, so if you have taken PTE more than once you can confirm which sitting produced your best score and when that particular result expires. Result validity is not the same as how long institutions accept it

This is the single most important thing to understand about PTE validity. Pearson keeps your result usable for two years. Separately, each university and each immigration authority sets its own rule for how recent an English result has to be when you use it. Those two things are not the same number, and the institution's rule always sits on top of Pearson's two-year validity.

In practice that means a result can be technically valid under Pearson's two-year rule but still be too old for a specific programme that wants a test taken within a shorter window. It can also work the other way in migration, where an authority may allow a result to be used within a window that is described differently from the plain two-year validity. The safe habit is to check two things every time: that your score is still inside the two-year Pearson validity, and that it meets the recency rule of the exact university or visa you are applying to.

PTE validity for Australia PR and skilled visas

For skilled migration to Australia, your PTE Academic result proves your English level and, at higher scores, earns points. The result is valid for two years in the usual way, but the Department of Home Affairs sets its own condition on how recent your English test must be at the point you are invited to apply. Because migration rules are updated from time to time, do not rely on a number you read on a forum or an old guide. PTE validity for Canada and PTE Core

PTE Core, the version accepted by IRCC for Canadian economic immigration, carries the same two-year result validity as PTE Academic. As with Australia, the immigration authority sets its own condition on how recent a language result must be for a given programme, so confirm the current requirement with IRCC rather than assuming the plain two-year window is all that matters. PTE validity for universities and student visas

Thousands of universities across Australia, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and the US accept PTE Academic for admission. What happens when your PTE score expires

Once a PTE result passes two years from the test date, it simply cannot be used. You will not be able to send it to a new institution, and any application that requires a valid English result will not accept it. Scores are not extended, renewed or reactivated, and there is no fee you can pay to keep an old result alive. The only way to have a valid score again is to book and sit the test.

There is one small piece of good news. Because PTE is computer-based and automatically scored, re-testing is quick to arrange and the result comes back fast, usually within about two business days. How to avoid your PTE score expiring at the wrong time

Most expiry problems come from sitting the test too early or too late relative to the real deadline. A few habits prevent that:

• Work backwards from your deadline. Identify when you actually need the score, whether that is a course application, a visa lodgement or an expected invitation to apply, then book close enough that the result is fresh but with a buffer for a possible re-take.
• Leave room for a second attempt. If you are chasing a specific band, book your first sitting early enough that you can re-test once and still be inside every recency rule that applies to you.
• Do not send an almost-expired score. If your result is within a couple of months of the two-year mark, expect that some institutions will reject it, and re-book rather than gamble.
• Track the test date, not the result date. Put the two-year expiry in your calendar the day you sit, so it never surprises you.

Do PTE Academic and PTE Core have the same validity?

Yes. Both versions of the test produce results that are valid for two years from the test date. Can you extend PTE validity?

No. There is no way to extend, freeze or renew a PTE result. The two-year window is fixed from the test date, and once it passes the score is gone for good. This is different from some documents that can be renewed on request, so do not plan around an extension that does not exist. If you think you may need the score for longer than two years, the answer is to time your test carefully and, if needed, sit it again closer to when you actually apply.

PTE validity compared with IELTS and other English tests

PTE is not unusual here. Most major English tests use the same two-year result validity, so switching tests does not buy you a longer shelf life. Does sitting PTE again change your old score's validity?

Each PTE result is independent and carries its own two-year validity from its own test date. Sitting the test again does not cancel or shorten an earlier result: while both are inside their two-year windows, you have two valid scores and you choose which one to send. That matters if you re-test hoping for a higher band but end up with a lower one, because your earlier, stronger result is still usable until it reaches its own two-year mark. A worked example: timing PTE around a deadline

Say you plan to apply for an Australian skilled visa and expect to be in a position to be invited around March 2028.
