PTE full form: what PTE stands for and what the exam is

Updated 16 July 2026 · about a 6-minute read

The full form of PTE is Pearson Test of English. It is a computer-based English language test, run by the education company Pearson, that measures your Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening in one two-hour sitting. Answers are scored automatically, so results come back fast. If someone says they are sitting the PTE, they almost always mean PTE Academic, the version used for university admission and for skilled migration to countries such as Australia.

What does PTE stand for?

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English, named after Pearson, the company that owns and delivers it. You may also see it written as the PTE exam or PTE Academic. Breaking the name down:

There is more than one PTE. The two that matter for most people are PTE Academic and PTE Core, covered below.

What is the PTE exam?

PTE Academic is a fully computer-based test taken at an approved test centre or, in some regions, online. You speak into a microphone, type on a keyboard, and the test is marked by automated scoring rather than a human examiner, which is why results usually arrive within about two days. A single sitting lasts roughly two hours and covers three parts:

Many tasks are integrated, so one task can test two skills at once. For the full task-by-task breakdown, see the PTE exam format, or try the tasks yourself with a free full PTE mock test.

PTE Academic vs PTE Core

The two current versions of PTE serve different goals:

Our practice covers both, with the correct task types for each exam. If Canada is your goal, start with a PTE Core mock test; for Australia or study, use the PTE Academic mock.

What is the PTE exam used for?

PTE is an English proof, so it is used wherever you need to show your English level:

How is PTE scored?

PTE reports results on the Global Scale of English, a scale that runs from 10 to 90. You get an overall score plus four skill scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, all on the same range. Underneath sit six enabling skills, such as Pronunciation, Oral Fluency and Grammar, and a weak enabling skill can drag several task scores down at once. To see how the numbers line up with IELTS bands and CEFR levels, use the PTE score chart, and to convert or predict a score use the PTE score calculator. For the mechanics of how the marking works, read how PTE is scored.

How long is a PTE score valid?

A PTE Academic result is valid for two years from your test date. After that, most universities and visa programmes will not accept it, so line up your test date with your application deadline rather than sitting the exam too early. If your score is close to expiring and you still need it, re-book in good time. For migration specifically, always confirm the validity rule for your visa subclass, because immigration authorities set their own conditions on top of the two-year result validity.

How to prepare for PTE

Because PTE is computer-based and automatically scored, the on-screen format and timing catch people out as much as the questions do. The most efficient way to prepare is to practise on tasks that copy the real interface, then fix your weakest skill first. Work through the task guides for each type, such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image and Write from Dictation, then sit a full mock to see your score on the 10 to 90 scale.
