PTE Summarize Written Text: template, tips & practice
Summarize Written Text (SWT) is a PTE Academic Writing task. You read a passage and write a summary in a single sentence of 5 to 75 words, in 10 minutes. The "single sentence" rule is the whole game: a full stop anywhere except the very end scores zero for form, so the template is built around one long, correct sentence.
How PTE Summarize Written Text is scored
SWT is scored on content (capturing the main idea and key supporting points), form (exactly one sentence, 5-75 words), grammar and vocabulary. The fastest way to lose marks is breaking the single-sentence rule or going over 75 words. Combine the passage's main idea with its key supporting point using connectors like "while", "which", "because" or "and".
The PTE Summarize Written Text template
- 1Find the main idea (usually the first or last sentence of the passage).
- 2Find one or two key supporting points.
- 3Join them into ONE sentence with connectors: "[Main idea], which [supporting point], because [reason/result]."
- 4Check: one capital letter, one full stop at the very end, 5-75 words, no semicolons used as full stops.
Worked example
Although remote work was once rare, the passage explains that it has become mainstream because improved technology lets employees be productive from home, while also reducing commuting costs and giving companies access to a wider talent pool.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing two sentences; any full stop before the end scores zero on form.
- Going over 75 words; keep it tight and use connectors instead of new sentences.
- Copying long phrases verbatim; paraphrase the main idea in your own words where you can.
- Adding your own opinion; SWT is a neutral summary of the passage only.
